The Present Perfect Tense and Present Perfect Continuous Tense

This unit is comprised of two major tenses; the present perfect tense and the present perfect continuous tense.

The Present Perfect Tense.

This tense is used to express action that happened in a period of time, is not yet finished. It is also used when the time in the past is not mentioned or is not important.

Or

It is used to express actions that took place in the past but the effects are felt in the present. The helping verbs used in this tense are has or have. The main verbs are all in past participle.

The main verbs change to the perfect form e.g

  1. She has played very well.
  2. We have put our books there.
  3. He has grown cabbages.

Change the given sentences to the present perfect tense.

  1. The carpenter sold a great deal of furniture.
  2. I finished making the book shelf.
  3. He went to see the carpenter.
  4. All the scout bought their equipment from the workshop.
  5. We polished the chairs and bencher.
  6. They took to the planks to workshop for planning.
  7. The lady cut the wood using a saw.
  8. The carpenter polished the cupboard.
  9. I saw the beautiful tables you made.
  10. We went to the workshop to see the carpenter.

The present perfect continuous tense.

This tense is used to express actions which started a time in the past and is still going on at the moment. In this tense, has/ have + been and the main verb ending in ´ing´ is used.

Examples:

  1. Jimmy has been sitting at a desk.
  2. We have been playing netball.
  3. They have been weaving baskets.
