Sample activity of integration on LSC S1:Urban and rural life

  1. Read the text about urbanisation below.
The urbanisation of Africa as a continent is rapidly increasing. It is projected that by 2050 urbanisation will have reached 60%. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as urbanisation often indicates that there is economic growth, and more employment opportunities for the poor of the continent. It can, unfortunately, also lead to more inequality, poverty and a decreased
quality of life when many people end up living in unhealthy conditions created by the slums. Industrialisation pulls people away from low- productivity farming and other rural occupations to high-productivity industries. This can be a good thing, provided it does not destroy a
country’s ability to produce enough food for its population.
  2. Study the two pictures on the next page carefully. Some activities and some
scenery and surroundings are missing from each picture. List three things
for each picture that you think would better illustrate:
    a) urban life
    b) rural life.
  3. Write two paragraphs. In the first paragraph, write what you think can be done to improve the lives of people living in an urban area. In the second paragraph, write what you think can be done to improve the lives of people living in a rural area.
