Changing Land Tenure System in East Africa – Sample Activity

Context

The government wishes to support entrepreneurs by providing them with loans through commercial banks. Commercial banks can give these bans provided that they get good collateral from the clients. Bukenya wishes to secure a loan from the bank using family land in order to develop his business that will help the family. He approaches his bank, which gives him forms to fill in and attach a collateral document, in this case, the land certificate and the repayment plan. In the forms, a section required Bukenya to describe the type of land he was to use as a form of security. Unfortunately, Bukenya does not know what type of land his family’s land is.
