Chapter 18 – Sample activity of integration

As communication develops, we become more connected to the rest of the world. People say the world is becoming a ‘global village’. The disadvantage of this is that our unique identities as countries and continents start to get diluted and lose their special characteristics and distinctiveness.

  1. In a similar way to music, poetry from Africa has a unique feel and rhythm to it. How can we preserve the identity of African poetry and music in a ‘global village’?
  2. Write a poem that sounds uniquely African. Choose any topic that is specific to Uganda. Your poem must:
  • be written on the topic of something unique to Uganda
  • consist of at least two stanzas
  • have a rhythm and a clear rhyme scheme
  • use imagery that makes the reader think of Africa
  • include at least one Ugandan figure of speech.
