Chapter Summary

In this chapter, you have learnt :

  • That measurement is a process of detecting an unknown physical quantity by using standard quantity.
  • That measurements can never be exact; there is always some uncertainty.
  • That the most common system of units in the world is the SI system.
  • That when converting units, check dimensions to see that the conversion has been done properly.
  • That the order-of-magnitude estimates can be very helpful.
  • That the three fundamental physical quantities of mechanics are length, mass and time, which in the SI system have the unit’s metres (m), kilograms (kg) and seconds (s), respectively.
  • That the prefixes indicating various powers of ten are used with these three basic units.
  • That the density of a substance is defined as its mass per unit volume.
  • The scientific method of study.
