Civil Society and Non-Governmental Organisations in East Africa – Sample Activity

Context

The Government of Uganda recognises the importance of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the country. However, the government is in the final stages of suspending the operations of some NGOs in a move some people consider to be “political persecution”. Authorities revealed that the dismissals are based on a range of reasons, including failing to fulfil terms and conditions that require the organisations not to be involved in politics.

Chapter Summary

In this chapter, you have learnt that the impact of CSOs and NGOs in East Africa ranges widely from socio-economic to political areas. While CSOS and NGOs face heavy resistance from governments and other external forces, they continue to benefit communities by offering employment opportunities, improving livelihoods, human rights advocacy and general development.
