Key Personalities in the History of East Africa Before Independence – Sample Activity

Context

The East African Community originally consisted of Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Recently, there have been requests by Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Somalia to join the East African Community. The people in these countries do not know much about the East African Community countries. Uganda is identified as one country that will host the next meeting of the East African Community that wishes to welcome the new states.

As the Minister for Foreign Affairs, prepare a speech for the President of Uganda to inform the new member states about the influential personalities in the history of East Africa that helped the countries get independence.

Chapter Summary

In this chapter, you have learnt that the independence of East African states was attained through struggles. The struggles were led by key personalities who, through their activities, mobilised people and applied pressure on colonial leaders to grant independence. Using their political party platforms, they put up more resistance against the colonialists than they could bear until independence was finally attained.
