Our visitor stepped up to the microphone. He arranged his notes on the podium and looked intently around the audience. There was silence in the room as we waited for him to speak. When he was satisfied that he had everyone’s attention, he drew a breath and began.
“Today I want us to think about ways we can support one another when times are tough. I would like every one of you to consider how you can support local, not only in business, but in every way – social, spiritual, family, community. When our borders are closed and we cannot get supplies from other countries, how do we cope? When small businesses are failing all around us, how can we assist them and help them survive? What practical actions in our everyday lives might make a difference? I want to make a plea for community spirit, for respect and empathy and for the people of this nation to work together. We must never lose the sense of togetherness that our grandparents and those before them shared, especially in the rural areas. The proverb says ‘When the moon is not full, the stars shine more brightly. Let us work together to support one another, in good times and bad.”
