Post-Independence Socio-economic Challenges in East Africa – Sample Activity

Context

Musubuzi is a businessman dealing in produce in Mubende. He buys produce like maize and beans from farmers and sells them in Kampala. The farmers depend on people like Musubuzi to buy their produce and get income for home use and to pay school fees. During school days he offers simple loans to the farmers to take their children back to school and pay after the harvest. Since the price of produce is determined by the market and sometimes the price is very low, some farmers fail to pay back Musubuzi and he has to attach their property until the money is paid back. Musubuzi makes flour out of maize and sells it back to farmers at a higher price when the produce is out of season. Hint: Read about the parish model to improve household incomes and transform the rural economy launched by His Excellency the President Y. T. K. Museveni.
