Mabira forest is one of the natural resources in central Uganda. Mabira forest is a dense rain-forest found in the District of Buikwe, between Jinja and Lugazi. It covers an area of about 120 square miles. The forest reserve is situated 20 kilometres away from Jinja and 54 kilometres from Kampala. Mabira is home to about 311 tree species with the forest centre containing many ancient trees; many of which are over 70 years old.
The outer part of the forest consists of trees which are about 25 years old. Mabira is home to 219 butterfly species, 316 bird species and 97 of moths. At one time history people were allowed to establish banana gardens in the forest. This resulted in logging and clearing by the communities living outside the forest. Before the forest became isolated in the late 1800’s, Mabira is believed to have extended without any interruption.
What used to be a dense and thick vegetation cover has been destroyed. Today the cool and quiet tourist attraction is starting to have a good amount warmth. Along the road you find piles of firewood cut for sale. This indicates a decrease in biomass of the great Mabira.

As an environmentalist who has passion of conserving forests, your trip to this area forces you take action. Write a newspaper article on how Mabira natural biomass should be restored to achieve the global sustainable development goals.
