Sample Activity of Integration on LSC S1:Matter

You are a member of the Natural Environmental Management Association (NEMA)
at your school. The association is developing an environmental campaign for
members of a community that lives next to a forest which is home to a majority
of wild animals. The poachers regularly set fire on the forest which becomes
wild to the community’s gardens. The community members plan to get rid of the
forest permanently. The association has to raise awareness about the common
phenomena on of change in climate. You are given these two processes
of change of matter and you are to elaborate a message showing their relationship:
Physical Changes, In a physical change matter changes form but not chemical
identity.

Sample Activity of Integration on LSC S1:Matter 1

Task:
Design a poster including the two processes of change of matter to show their
relationship.
Chapter 4 summary

  • Matter is anything that can occupy space and has mass. Matter exists in four states: solid, liquid, gas and plasma. Plasma form can conduct electricity therefore used to make laptop screens.
  • Kinetic theory of matter can be used to explains the potential and kinetic energy of particles in the four different states.
  • According to the particle theory of matter, there is inter-particle force of attraction. The strength of inter-particle force determines the arrangement of the particles.
  • Solids particles are regularly arranged due to the strong inter-particle forces of attraction, while gases have very weak interparticle force of attraction, hence arrangement of their particles is irregular.
  • Daily phenomena in ourlife like gas pressure, cloth drying and rain formation can be explained using sing the knowledge of particle theory of matter.
  • Changes in our daily life can be classified as physical or chemical change. In physical change no new substance is formed while in chemical change a new substance is formed.
