Sample activity of integration on LSC S1:Prose: exploring a novel


Along with many other countries, one of Uganda’s social problems is gender inequality. You have been asked by a school society to write a summary of a book on gender inequality which you enjoyed reading. Write about the setting and about a main character you admire.

  1. Write a paragraph where you explain the literary language effects used to describe the characters and setting. Use these questions to help you: What makes the main character interesting?
    Explain why you like or dislike the main character.
    How does the author bring the characters alive?
    Identify language that describes characters and setting, for example, adjectives, metaphors, similes and imagery.
    List the vocabulary that describes the mood and atmosphere.
  2. Use your imagination to discuss how your main characters could help solve the problem of gender inequality.
    Write a paragraph describing how this character would use their strengths and wisdom to uplift women’s roles in society.

1.Analyse prose in order to identify the structure and themes.
2. Understand and use literary language effects in order to describe setting.
3.List choices of vocabulary that influence the mood and atmosphere of setting and words that make characterisation come alive.
4. Employ literary language effects to make characters come to life.
5.Consider the use of imagery, adjectives, metaphors and similes to describe setting and characterisation.
6.Demonstrate understanding of language effects in prose.
7. Demonstrate characterisation in prose by reading/acting scenes dramatically.
8.Write a short story that reflects your understanding of literary techniques.
