Sample activity of integration on LSC S1:Prose: key terminology


Imagine you are a writer for a magazine. You know that many citizens are
complaining about corruption in your country.
There are many children living in orphanages, which get a lot of aid from
well-wishers. However, the children are not looked after well because the
caregivers are corrupt.

  1. Identify two major causes of this problem and the ideas that you want to
    bring to the reader’s attention.
  2. Write a short story of four paragraphs to expose the problem.

Summary of key concepts
In this chapter, you have learnt to:
1.Understand the key terminology used when reading, understanding, reviewing and analyzing prose texts including plot, character, setting, dialogue, theme, structure, style/language, point of view.
2. Read a variety of prose texts with understanding.
3.Share reading experiences with the class.
4. Use the key terminology when discussing a variety of prose texts.
5.Discuss the setting and main plot when discussing a text, and summarizing the story.
6.Identify themes, explain how they are identified and provide examples.
7.Create a list of key elements of structure, e.g. sections, chapters, prologue, epilogue, character arcs, escalation of tension/suspense, climax, resolution.
8. Choose and read a book before next term.
