Sample Activity of Integration – Physical and Chemical Properties of Soil

Context

Below the valley floor are more gently sloping foothills on which a school is located. Learners were asked to collect soil samples for study from the slopes of the valley.

They found, at the sampling point of 20 metres, that the type of vegetation was changing. Near the school compound were shrubs and pale-looking grass which were short; while on the valley floor were big trees with deep green-coloured leaves.

The soils in the valley were red or dark- brown and stuck on the tools used to get the sample. Also. the soil particles collected from the valley floor were quite wet.

A variety of soil microorganisms were found in this soil. Besides, the fine soil particles in the road to the valley were white.
