The Colonial Administrative Systems in East Africa – Sample Activity

Context

The COVID-19 pandemic hit Uganda in March 2019 and the country went into lockdown. As a result, the Government of Uganda, through the Prime Minister’s Office, decided to help the poor people by distributing food items.

A second wave of the pandemic hit the country and a 42-day lockdown was announced by the President of the Republic of Uganda. The office of the Prime Minister and the National COVID Task Force decided to support the poor people across the nation by extending cash support of Shs. 100,000. The Prime Minister’s office was not certain about the best way to identify the poor people.

Task
Prepare a written summary for the Prime Minister on how structures of administration in place can be used to assist the poor people who are affected by the lockdown down to the grass roots.

Chapter Summary

In this chapter, you have learnt that colonial administration was introduced by explorers, missionaries and imperialists in East Africa. While Uganda and Kenya were colonised by the British, Tanzania came under German administration. The results were of both a positive and a negative nature. You appreciated that our East African leadership today is a reflection of the colonial administration systems in East Africa.
