Topic 2: Working with Integers-Sample Activity

The park manager wants to make a timetable for buses and mini-buses leaving the park at different times of the day, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Buses and mini-buses leave the park at intervals of 40 minutes and 50 minutes respectively after loading. Both vehicles start loading at the same time.

Task Help the park manager to:

a) Draw a departure timetable for the 2 vehicles from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

b) Identify any time of the day when the two vehicles will leave the park at the same time.

c) How can traffic jam be controlled?

•All natural numbers are whole numbers. Natural numbers are also referred to as counting numbers. They begin from 1 to infinity

• Money is not always written in negatives. Just put the figure in brackets to mean it is negative.

• A set of Rules on the Hierarchy of operations (BODMAS):

1. Perform operations with Brackets first and if more than one set of brackets is used, start with the inner most bracket.

2. If “Of” has been used, it should be the second.

3. Starting from the left, perform all Divisions and Multiplication

4. Finally working from the left, perform Addition and Subtraction.

The numbers that form complete groups are the factors of that number.
