CHAPTER 7: EXPLORING THE WORLD OF PERFORMING ARTS

Introduction

In this chapter, you will study about foreign musicians. You will use their compositions to inspire you with ideas for creating your own music You will identify the genres, styles and themes in foreign drama to enable you create your own skits. You will also study Salsa dance and use its features to choreograph your new dances

Activity 7.1 Studying foreign music and drama to inspire your own compositions

In pairs,

1. Watch a foreign music video and identify the composer, the themes, styles and genres used 2. Choose another song from another foreign musician and perform it. Discuss the styles, themes and genres in it compared to our Ugandan music.

3. Compose your own songs using some of the styles, themes and genres the foreign composer used

4. Watch a foreign drama skit and discuss the styles, themes and genres with regard to the elements of conflict, exposition, climax and resolution.
5. Create and perform a 15 minutes drama piece with some of foreign features you have learnt.

Activity 7.2 Studying foreign dance to inspire own dance

1. Look at the picture of Salsa dance above. Identify which part of the world it comes from. Describe some elements of dance that you can observe in the picture.
2. Watch a video of Salsa dance and in a discussion, appreciate the dance elements and other aspects of dance in it.
3. Create a new dance using some elements of Salsa.
