CHAPTER 8 : EXPERIENCING AND APPRECIATING STAFF NOTATION

In this chapter, you are going to experiment, create and appreciate works of Performing Arts from various genres, styles and cultures to effectively communicate messages and market works of Performing Arts.

Introduction

In this chapter, you are going to experiment, create and appreciate works of Performing Arts from various genres, styles and cultures to effectively communicate messages and market works of Performing Arts. You are to compose, read and write music with the music elements of pitch, tempo, dynamics, duration, timbre and texture. You will also use appropriate technology and conventions to write and record your music. It is important to always understand the effectiveness of the elements and principles of Performing Arts.

Activity 8.1 Creating and Performing Western Music

In this activity, you are going to use the song called ‘Power of Choice! You will benchmark it to create your own version with awareness of the basic elements of music you know.

In a group,

  1. Read and interpret the song ‘Power of Choice’ and then perform it to the class with an awareness of the elements of pitch, tempo, dynamics, duration, timbre and texture.
  1. Sing ‘Power of Choice’ pronouncing the words accurately.
  2. Suggest changes in pitch and rhythm within the song and perform your own version of it
  3. Talk about the effectiveness of the combinations of different elements of music used in your version of the song
  1. Notate the first section of your version using the key of C Major

Activity 8.2 Identifying the basic elements of music in a performed piece

  1. Perform your version of ‘Power of Choice’
  2. Describe key elements of music that suit this particular style of music
  3. Review and comment on your friends’ work, referring to key elements, including different aspects of style.
  4. Suggest ways of how your friends’ works can be improved and Incorporate these suggestions into your own work.

Activity 8.3 Analysing the basic elements of music in a played piece of music

In a group.

  1. Listen to music your teacher has selected and compare pitch, tempo, dynamics, duration, timbre and texture in the pieces
  2. Choose a piece of music you prefer and explain why you chose it.
  3. Explain the aspects of technology that have had an impact on the Performing Arts in Uganda and in the rest of the world.
  4. Discuss whether this impact in (3) above is positive or negative
