POPULATION AND URBANIZATION IN EAST AFRICA

After studying this chapter, you will be able to: (a) understand the concepts related to population. (b) understand the demographic transition model and how this relates to the historical growth and population structures of East Africa. (C) use maps, statistics, graphs and diagrams to analyse population (d) know the main areas of low and high density of population and the location of the main urban centers of East Africa. (e) understand the relationship between populations; resources and the provision of services understand the factors which have led to rapid population increase in Uganda and the rest of East Africa. (g) understand the relationship between a rapidly growing population and urbanization. (h) understand the concept of urbanization, the factors influencing urbanization and functions of urban areas. (i) appreciate the implications of urbanization for development (j) use statistics and photographs to illustrate urbanization and its problems (k) understand the methods which can be used to control the rate of population growth. (l) appreciate the need for and use of population control methods (m) appreciate the implication of urbanization for development. (n) understand Kampala city as an example of rapid urbanization and the advantages, disadvantages and problems resulting from urbanization (o)Appreciate the social and cultural problems of slowing down population growth.
