THE GEOGRAPHY OF NORTH AMERICA

North America is one of the continents of the world-It is found in the Northern Hemisphere. It lies between 100 N and 710N (Latitude) and 670W and 1680W (Longitude). North America has got a total area of 24,500,000 km2.The shape of North America is described as triangular that is widest in the North and narrowest in the South.

It surrounded by a number of water bodies

North Atlantic Ocean, Hudson bay, Beaufort sea
East Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Carribean sea
West Gulf of California, Pacific Ocean

The coast of North America is out by a number opening and these include:-

  • Gulf of St Lawrence
  • Gulf of Mexico
  • Gulf of California
  • Hudson bay

The structure of North America has been worked on by several forces for over a long period of time thus causing a change in the shape of the continent. These forces include:-

PHYSICAL REGIONS OF NORTH AMERICA

North America is divided into a number of regions.

  1. Hudson bay lowland:

This is found in the extreme north of the continent and south of the Hudson bay.

  1. Canadian shield / Laurentian

This extends from the Hudson-bay to the great lakes in the Eastern direction and the great bear lake in the West. It is made up of hard rocks which where worked on by Glaciations.

  1. The Interior and coastal plaints

These region boarders the Rocky Mountains and extends to the delta of Mockonzie in the North to Rio Grande in the South. The region has an extensive system of rivers draining from River Mississippi.

  1. Appalachian Mountains / Highlands.

They are found in the Eastern part of the continent and they are the oldest fold mountains which run through the eastern part of USA. It is divided in the following belts:

  • The great lakes valleys
  • The Western plateau
  • The Eastern foothill

And the region has got large fields of cool.

  1. Rockies (Western Cordillera)

These are found on the western side of the continent. They are very steep compared to the Appachial Mountains. They stretch from Alaska to Central America and they consist of young fold mountain with a plateau, basin and rift valley within the mountains.

VEGETATION OF NORTH AMERICA

Is the plant cover of an area.

The distribution of natural vegetation in North America is mainly influenced by the climate and relief. There are different vegetation types in North America and these include the following.

The peoples and population and the country or the state with the highest population is USA follower by Mexico, and

then Canada.

The major cities in North America include Mexico City, New York, San Francisco, Kansas, and Chicago etc. The plost densely populated areas included Eastern USA and the Southern parts of the continents. The Northern part is sparsely populated because of the cold climate conditions. The major groups of people in North America include; the Negroes, Whites, the red Indians.
