HISTORY

The Aga Khan University is an international university, operating on campuses in Central and South Asia, East Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

Existing campuses and international programmes include:

  • Faculty of Health Sciences located on a 84-acre (340,000 m2) campus in the heart of Karachi, Pakistan, built in the 1980s
  • Aga Khan University Health Sciences campus in Nairobi, Kenya
  • A USD 500 million campus for the university’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences is under development in Karachi Pakistan. An area of 1,100 acres (4.5 km2) has been acquired just outside Karachi, and Payette Associates are the project architects.
  • Institute for Educational Development in the Karimabad area of Karachi, Pakistan and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
  • Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations in London, United Kingdom;
  • A USD 450 million campus planned for Arusha, in north-eastern Tanzania to be built in the next 15 years.
  • Advanced Nursing Studies (ANS) Programmes at campuses in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda;
  • Programmes for capacity development for teachers and nurses in Afghanistan, Egypt and Syria;

In Uganda, where nurses provide the vast majority of health services, the AKU Advanced Nursing Studies (ANS) programme helps working nurses to improve their knowledge and leadership skills.

As of 2009, almost 300 students have graduated from the ANS programme with a nursing qualification. These graduates represent a significant addition to the qualified nursing professionals currently working in Uganda.

ACADEMICS

THE SCHOOL OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY

In Uganda, The School of Nursing and Midwifery offers a two and a hald-year Post RN Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme for nurses holding Registered Nurse license and a three-year Diploma in General Nursing programme for Enrolled Nurses to become eligible for registration as Registered Nurse.

EN-RN Conversion Diploma Programme, Uganda

Through this programme, nurses who have been working in a clinical setting for at least two years will gain knowledge, attitudes and skills to provide quality promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative care to individuals, families and communities in East Africa. Students will also learn leadership skills to manage care at the institutional level. It is designed for enrolled nurses who wish to upgrade to General Nursing diploma and licensed to practice as Registered Nurses.

Programme Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this programme will:

  • be safe, competent and culturally sensitive nurses giving care based on ethical principle
  • be effective communicators, able to maintain interpersonal, professional interaction with patients, families, communities and other healthcare professionals
  • be effective nursing managers
  • be lifelong learners who promote personal and professional growth
  • be aware of the research process and its importance in providing best practice​

Post-RN BScN Programme, Uganda

This is a two and a half-year programme designed to provide senior registered nurses with an opportunity to upgrade their diploma qualification to degree level.

Application form

Application form can be obtained from the Registrar’s Office at the campus or it may be requested by writing to the Registrar’s Office at regoff.ug.sonam@aku.edu. Before submitting an application, you must ensure that you have complied with the instructions stipulated on the form. 

Applicants should provide the following:

    • Completed and signed application for admission

 

  • Certified copy of secondary school certificate
  • Certified coy of ​
  • Certified copy of nursing certificate
  • Certified copy of transcripts from nursing college
  • Certified copy of certificate of registration with the applicable nursing council
  • Letter of release/recommendation from current employer
  • Two passport-sized photographs 

 

Application fee

A non-refundable application fee is payable. Applications will not be processed without the application fee.
