Microsoft Innovation Centre - UgandaIn 2011 the government of Uganda signed an MoU with Microsoft Corp and the United Nations Industrial Organization (UNIDO) to engage in nurturing new innovations and make Uganda a hub of ICT innovations, hence the Microsoft Innovation Center - Uganda (MIC-Uganda) was born. Through the directorate of engagement, research and innovations, UTAMU is working with the Microsoft Innovation Center-Uganda to acceleration innovations through hosting of innovations seminars, business and technical bootcamps, creating awareness among others.
This year MIC-Uganda has selected UTAMU to host three developer bootcamps I.e; windows 8 developer bootcamp on 25th to 28th March, 2013, window 8 Phone and Windows Azure. During these events participants are taken through principals of innovative thinking, product development, introduced to Microsoft development platforms and they develop and published Apps on the windows market place.
These events are absolutely free and are part of UTAMU community engagement initiative, focusing of developing and deploying technologies that are relevant to the community.

ITU Centres of Excellence
The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) a Union Nations Organization responsible for the global regulation of telecommunications. Under its Human Capital Development arm (HCB), a human capital development programm through the ITU Academy. The ITU Academy programmes is globally implementated under the ITU Centers of Excellennce Network.
The training programmes developed and accredited by industrial experts in specific fields of ICT and telecommunication, satellite communications, wireless networking, spectrum management, cyber security, cost modelling and IT strategy management among others.
These training programmes are delivered by the ITU experts either via the ITU Academy learning management system www.academy.itu.intor through face to face skills tranfer bootcamps and seminars.
At a recently concluded ITU Centers of Excellence (CoE) consultative meeting in the region, the ITU COE for Africa selected UTAMU to host a number of training events in collaboration with the Africa Advanced Level Telecommunication Institute (AFRALTI) COE www.afralti.org.
The events this year,
- Wireless Wetworking 24th June – 28th June, 2013
- IT strategy management July 22nd to 26th July, 2013
UTAMU was identified as a future model center of excellence, with a robust organization management and self sustainability model. Besides, the human capital resources UTAMU can bring on board the CoE network, from the fact that UTAMU at the moment has of the highest concentration of PhD holders in computing as ratio of her accademic staff. The capabilities and aspirations of UTAMU are inline with the recently launched ITU Academy strategy of sourcing collaborating institutions that bring complimentary competences into the network. The hosting of these event will act as yard stick to the future success of the ITU center for excellence cooporation with UTAMU.
These high level trainings are suitable for stakeholders with job responsibilities – Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Information Security Auditors, Network Planners, Access network engineers and IT Operations (such as systems, web server, and network administrators). Top institutional leaders like CEO, manage operations, ICT integrators, ICT and Management Consultants among others. These workshops are also ideal for people who are at the beginning of their career in data communication and researchers in the field of wireless communication technologies and corporate governance.

UTAMU Cisco Academy
UTAMU in partnership with Cisco Inc. a worldwide leader in networking and Internet Technologies that transforms how people connect, communicate, and collaborate runs a state of art Cisco Networking Academy. The launch of the Cisco Academy at UTAMU demostrates trust and confidence leading global brands like Cisco Systems Inc. have in UTAMU to deliver transformatative and industrial oriented skills based education, relevant to the human capacity needs of the 21st century.
The Cisco Academy initiative is one of the many strategic human capacity intervation UTAMU is undertaking to improve the skills sets of Ugandans as a means of improving global competitiveness of the country in the areas of ICT strive to make Uganda the ICT hub for the region.

HUAWEI Certifications: Ugandan's Only HUAWEI Academy
Huawei Technology platforms are quickly gaining ground in the core networks of most African telecom operators. Thus it has become apparent that the future Network Engineer and IT Specialist has to work with these technologies hence need to have multi-vendor competences. Thus UTAMU has Partnered with African Advanced Level Telecommunication Institute (AFRALTI) www.afralti.org a Premier Partner of Huawei Authorized Networking Academy (HANA) in Africa to run Huawei Certification programmes. UTAMU becames the first and only Hauwei authorized training center in Uganda.

Like Cisco, Huawei course materials are developed by Huawei and a team of global experts and offer features such as network simulation exercises, labs, and assessments that provide remedial feedback to help reinforce important concepts. Certified instructors provide hands-on support in specially equipped labs to facilitate learning and track student progress. Every student who enrolls for the course will get the official huawei learning kit and they can take the certification exam at any authorized Pearson VE and Prometric Testing centers.
Juakali Programmes
The informal sector plays a critical role in our economy. While the sector offers a wider number of opportunities of personal and career development, the lack of formal education in terms of career and business development, financial literacy and brand development and business management has constrained the development of the industry and limited access to more opportunities to the youth working in these industries.
Because of lack of professioinalism the sector is often associated with high rates of crime, poverty, disease among others. Therefore, UTAMU has design unique training programmes focusing on professionalising various vacations in the sector. The juakali initiative is targeting all workers in informatal sector including boda boda, taxi drivers, plumbers, electricians, mechanics to mention but a few.
To accelerate the implementation of this initaitive, UTAMU is collaborating with various associations and organizations like the Uganda Technicians and Information Technology Association (UTITA) from Katwe local industry Zone to equip their members with professional business development, career and financial management skills.
